Legal issues and photography seminar

The Mawson Lakes Photography Club is pleased to announce that Luke Dale, a partner at Kelly & Co Lawyers, has kindly offered to present a session on legal issues relating to photography, including:

  • Where can I / can't I take photographs legally?

  • Does the size of my camera matter?

  • Do I need to ask for permission if I want to take someone's photo in a public place? What if it's a photo of a child?

  • Can I put photos of people on my personal website, blog, or share them on Facebook or Google+?

  • What should I do if I get approached by a security guard or police officer saying that I'm not allowed to take photos and that I must delete them?

  • I have read that I need a signed consent form to be able to use photos commercially? What does 'commercial use' mean?

  • When do I need a signed consent form and what should it cover?

  • What does copyright entail and why should I care about it?

  • What about licensing of images? That sounds awfully complicated? What are the options?

  • What should I do if I find out that someone has used one of my images without my permission on their website, in their publication, or as their own?

The session will be held on Thursday 20th March, at Kelly & Co offices:
Kelly & Co Lawyers
Level 21
91 King William Street, Adelaide

The session will commence at 6:00pm. For security reasons all attendees must be in the building by 5:45pm. The building will be locked from this time onwards.

Attendance is open to members from all local camera clubs but capacity limited to approximately 50 attendees - entry will be on a first come first serve basis. Entry is free for Mawson Lakes Photography Club members and by gold coin donation for all others.

We also invite those planning to attend to submit any additional questions they would like covered by Sunday February 23rd to Kylie Gray at brettkylie7375@hotmail.com.

Characters of the Fleurieu competition

Initiated by The Royal SA Society of Arts

What a chance to really exercise your creative talents! ‘Characters of the Fleurieu’ means just that, BUT - it doesn’t necessarily have to be a person. Thinking outside the square it could be animal, abstract, an iconic building, people collectively etc. etc.. Food for thought? No that's not a clue!

Special effects or a variety of media are certainly acceptable, but don’t loose sight of the words CHARACTERS of the Fleurieu.

Great prizes - $3,000 for best overall, printing & framing to the value of $500 from Atkins Technicolour, and a camera plus tuition to the value of $300 from Diamonds Photographics. It all sounds like great fun and should be a fascinating exhibition. Go for it!! - but no landscapes! Entries due by 12th April 2014.

For more info please refer to www.compassfoto.com and click on 'competitions'. For artists (as apposed to photographic artists) in your club there are also additional prizes. Please refer to www.rsasarts.com.au for more information.

Diamonds/PW event and discount cards

Dear Club Secretaries and Members,

I have just been informed by Liana MacLaren, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator of Diamonds/PW that the latest discount card requests are in the process of being made and should be ready shortly.

The discounts page for SAPF members has also been updated with more exclusive offers for card holders.  This can be found at: www.diamondscamera.com.au/SAPF.

One of these offers pertains to the recent notice I sent out re Mark Horsburgh, a Canon Master who specialises in motor-sport photography.  The cost for the public to attend is $49.00 but SAPF/Diamonds card holders are able to go to this event for free.  The event is on the 25th of February and perfectly timed for the Clipsal.  Members can see the details and register online through the following link: www.diamondscamera.com.au/markhorsburgh.

We hope some of you can take advantage of this offer.

SA Life magazine

Dear Club Secretaries and members,

In approaching SA Life magazine for promotion and announcement of the SAPF Annual Exhibition, I was informed by the Deputy Editor that the magazine would be delighted to receive your stunning images taken in South Australia, for their SA Images page.

As images will be published in a high quality magazine, please keep dpi above 300.

Submit images to: editorial@salife.com.au

Your image will be considered for publication and if that does happen it will be a promotion for the photographer, the State and hopefully your club if you mention that detail in your submission.

I hope some of our members will take advantage of this offer and keep your eye on the SA Life magazine to check out whose image may be featured.

Kind regards,

Lydia Strutton AAPS  AFIAP
